Polling stations opened in historic election in Chile

Santiago de Chile, May 15 (Prensa Latina) Polling stations opened at 08:00 on Saturday for Chile´s most important local elections for the country's politics in decades.

A total of 14,900,089 citizens are registered to elect for the first time the 16 regional governors, plus 345 mayors, 2,252 councilpeople and 155 members of the Convention that will draft the new Constitution.

The so-called megaelections this Saturday and Sunday will have political consequences for the country in the short and long term, according to observers.

Early morning and despite low temperatures, there were already people lining up to cast their vote, although there was little turnout in general, and also many polling stations were slowly set up due to the lack of personnel.

Some 2,700 polling sites were set up across the country with 46,000 polling tables and 184,000 ballot boxes, which will be open Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 to 18:00, local time, unless there are still voters waiting to vote.

According to data from the Electoral Service (SERVEL), 15,400 candidates ran for office, the highest number in Chile´s history.
