Presidents of Guatemala and Dominican Republic visit Spain

Madrid, Apr 19 (Prensa Latina) Dominican Republic's President Luis Abinader and Guatemala's Alejandro Giammattei begin on Monday an official visit to Spain before attending the Ibero-American Summit in Andorra.

Abinader and Giammattei will be the only Latin American presidents who will attend in person the 27th edition of the Ibero-American integration mechanism, while the remaining leaders will do so virtually.

Andorra proposed a semi face-to-face meeting in which only four delegations from member countries will travel to the Principality: Spain and Portugal, due to geographical proximity, and Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, the previous and next headquarters of the Summit.

The Summit in Andorra, located between Spain and France, was scheduled for November 2020, but decided to postpone due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the hope that it could be entirely in person, which was ruled out in the end.

According to a communique from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Dominican and Guatemalan presidents expect to meet today separately with King of Spain, Felipe VI, and President of the Spanish Government Pedro Sanchez.

On occasion of the official visit, Spain will sign memoranda of understanding with the Dominican Republic and Guatemala for bilateral consultations between the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
