‘Vaccines are not going to stop the wave of the pandemic (…) there is not enough availability to protect everyone in those countries with highest risk,’ Dr. Carissa Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), regretted.
Etienne explained that vaccine production limitations have slowed down deliveries through Covax mechanism, and its normalization is still not expected for a few weeks.
In view of such a situation, Etienne urged regional nations to use a comprehensive strategy that includes, in addition to immunization, public health measures to curb the spread of the virus.
Since March, PAHO´s Revolving Fund has aided to supply nearly three million vaccine doses to 28 countries.
To date, over 247 million Covax vaccines have been administered in the region, including those ones obtained through bilateral agreements and donations.
