According to the most recent report from the Ministry of Health, the average number of daily infections countrywide increased in the last week by 789.
The fluctuations in this number between days is a result of the variability of the reports of the diagnostic tests for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, according to the health authorities.
According to the report, during the last week the central province of Gauteng registered an average of 247 new Covid-19 cases; the highest daily figure so far, followed by Western Cape, with 115.
Also, the Ministry reported 62 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the number of total deaths in South Africa since March 2020 to 53,173.
Most of the deaths were registered in Western Cape and Eastern Cape, with 11,480 and 11,373, respectively.
South Africa aims to inoculate 67 percent of its population in three consecutive vaccination phases in order to achieve group immunity to the coronavirus.
