The world saw what happened in that African country 27 years ago, and knows the horrible consequences when hatred is allowed to prevail, Guterres highlighted in his message for the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Preventing such an act from happening again, he noted, requires countering hate-driven extremist movements, which are a transnational threat.

‘We must redouble our efforts and forge a common agenda to renew and revitalize our collective actions in the future.’

In doing so, he added, there is an urgent need to uphold human rights and continue to push for policies that fully respect all members of society.

Rwanda experienced one of the most painful chapters in modern human history, but its people have rebuilt themselves from the ashes, Guterres said.
