Chile Approves Plan for New Period of Antarctic Activities
11 de enero de 2017, 14:56Santiago de Chile, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) The Ministers of Foreign Relations, Heraldo Muñoz and Defense, Jose Antonio Gomez, approved today the Plan of Antarctic Activities 2017-2018, containing actions for the institutions attending the region.
In a communiqué released today, Muñoz explained that among the challenges to come is Antarctic tourism.
Regarding that he said 90 percent of that tourism will be in the Antarctic Peninsula, 'that is, in a territory where Chile is claiming sovereignty', he explained when referring to ther Plan of Activities.
The head of Chilean diplomacy attended the 3rd Meeting of the Council on Antarctic Policy. Rector organ of the Chilean Antarctic activities, it is in charge specifically of establishing the politic, scientific, economic and judicial bases in that southern territory.
During the meeting a report was presented including the actions carried out by the foreign ministry on that cold region last year, and a series of documents were approved by the Council, among them the new National Antarctic Policy.
According to experts, the document is vitally important for the country and they assure the national Antarctic development and the evolution of the Antarctic Treaty System demands updated policies and according to national interests in this issue.
The year 2016 was one of the most fruitful as Antarctic policy is concerned, affirmed Muñoz, who recalled the celebration in Chilean soil of the 39th meeting of the Antarctic Treaty held last May.
Chilean FM said that last year the country made important achievements and mentioned the creation of a protected marine area in the Ross sea, with the collaboration of Chile and the ratification of the prohibition of mining exploring activities and the exclusive authorization of scientific activities.
