Filipino Environmentalists Oppose Construction of Submarine Park
11 de enero de 2017, 14:52Manila, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) Philippine environmentalists are opposing the construction of a touristic submarine park on Coron island, due to the risks that it would represent to the coral population in the east of the country.
The tourist attraction proposed by the American broadcasting corporation, Nickelodeon - creators of the animated cartoon, Bob Esponja - envisages visitors interacting with the cartoon characters in a real aquatic environment, a fact that has alarmed ecologists.
'It is impossible to go through with this project without destroying coral reefs or marine ecosystems,' said Salvemos los Mares de Filipinas CEO, Anna Oposa.
'Coron island has species at risk of extinction and the alteration of its ecosystem will cause irreparable damage,' she added.
Greenpeace Asia is also opposed to the project, stating that Palawan, considered the last ecologic border of the Philippines, offers enough natural beauty and does not need artificial attractions.
Nickelodeon still lacks the necessary permits to realize the project, which they hope to open in 2020. This includes authorization from the Environment and Natural Resources Department of the Philippines.
