Almost 800 Panamenian Arrested for Drug Trafficking
11 de enero de 2017, 14:39Panama, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) Panamanian authorities have seized more than 63 tons of drugs and arrested 797 people suspected of having links to drug trafficking during 2016, according to an official report published on Wednesday.
The report published by the Public Ministry of the Central American nation states that 89 percent of the drugs seized last year, was cocaine, a total of 56.13 tons and 75.5 percent of those arrested, were Panamanians.
The rest of the drugs seized in 2016 included nearly seven tons of marijuana, while 195 of those arrested in the operation, came from abroad, although the source did not specify the nationalities.
According to statements by the Minister of Public Security, Alexis Bethancourt, until December 13th 2016, Panama's authorities had seized a record of 62.3 tons of narcotics.
In 2015, Panamanian authorities seized 58.1 tons of drugs, in total. Over 500 tons were seized between 2010 and 2016, according to data published by the Public Ministry.
