When signing the book of condolences opened at the diplomatic headquarters of that European nation in Havana, the official pointed out the legacy of the founder of the Portuguese Socialist Party, who died on January 7 in a hospital in Lisbon at the age of 92.
On the occasion, the Portuguese ambassador to Cuba, Luis Faru, stated that Soares, during his life, showed great courage and resistance against the dictatorship of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar until the so-called Revolution of the Carnations in 1974, and then in the democratic establishment in that country.
He also said that Soares was a friend of Cuba and was always interested in knowing the state of bilateral ties, even though in recent years he stayed far from politics.
He also described the relations between the Caribbean island and his country at the political, institutional, economic and cultural levels as excellent, and expressed his hope of continuing to consolidate these ties.
