India Calls for UN Reform and Criticizes Security Council
New Delhi, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) India has called for a profound reform of the UN, especially its Security Council, considering that under the current format it is unable to face the main problems affecting the world today.
Several national media stressed the intervention of the Indian representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin, during a debate held yesterday on conflict prevention and peacekeeping.
As the world changes, the institutional architecture responsible for the areas of peace and security remains frozen, the diplomat said.
The Security Council, which takes decisions on behalf of the majority, represents an increasingly small minority of the world's population, he said.
Akbaruddin criticized the UN agency for having lost all its legitimacy and therefore warned that it cannot be an effective tool to address the challenges of conflict prevention and peacekeeping.
Efforts to avoid such crises can only be effective if they are undertaken with the consent and cooperation of the affected Member States and not through taxation, he said.
As the saying goes, you cannot shake hands with your clenched fist, the diplomat said.
