2017: A Year for Sport in Venezuela, Says Minister
06 de enero de 2017, 16:50Caracas, Jan 6 (Prensa Latina) The VenezuelanMinister for Youth and Sport, Mervin Maldonado, said today that 2017 will be a year for the improvement and spread of sports in Venezuela.
After an activity called the 72th Mass for Sport, held in the Church of Divina Pastora, in this capital, the Venezuelan leader said that during this year, when a new Olympic cycle starts, one of the tasks will be to go on in the deepening of the overcrowding sports in the nation.
'In 2017 the sport is going to deepen as tool for peace and for life', he expressed.
One of the challenges is to overcome what has been done in previous years and prepare athletes for the new Olympic cycle, which extends up to 2020, he said.
He added that President Nicolas Maduro already gave guidance for the coming months and has strengthened a working team to enhance sports and the participation of the country in international events.
Maldonado acknowledged that all the achievements in 2016, especially the three medals (one silver and two bronze) in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, highlighted the potential of the nation in competitions.
'It was a year that allowed us to demonstrate the capabilities sport has to overcome any difficulty,' he said.
For his part, the President of the National Institute of sports (IND) Pedro Infante, reported that IND will recover this year 12 national centers of high performance through plans and recovery for sports infrastructure projects.
In addition, he stressed that the entity will continue to spread sports in schools in the country.
Infante was optimistic about the capabilities of the Venezuelan sports selections for the coming years and noted that the results of the last Olympic cycle, 2012-2016, will be multiplied in Tokyo 2020.
