Santiago de Chile, Jan 3 (Prensa Latina) General (R) Eduardo Gordon must appear at a hearing on March 1st at the request of the Chilean Prosecutor''s Office for the crime of misappropriation of public funds and high expenses in representation.
According to the website Latercera.com, this action is particularly relevant because it is the first time that the Chilean court accuses an ex-head of the Carabineros (militarized police).
The request was made by Eugenio Campos, regional prosecutor of Magallanes, and lawyer Daniel Martorell, adviser of the Council of Defense of the State.
Gordon is investigated for the use of over $ 21 million USD in representation expenses by the Public Relations department of the Carabineros while serving as director-head.
On the same day, March 1st, Jorge Serrano, who until the middle of December was a member of the high command of the Carabineros and who went into retirement at the announcement of the staff for 2018, must declare at the court.
The corruption case that affects the Carabineros, discovered in March 2017, is the biggest in the history of the institution, and exceeds $25,500,000 Chilean pesos (about $38 million USD), while more than 200 people are involved.
