Cuban Experts Study Coca Leaf Properties
17 de marzo de 2017, 16:22La Paz, Mar 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuban ambassador to Bolivia, Benigno Perez, informed today that Cuban experts, at the request of the Andean government, have conducted a research to inquire into the scientific properties of the coca leaf.
Speaking to the Bolivian daily Cambio, the diplomat explained that the study was carried out at LABIOFAM, a Cuban entity dedicated to the development and production of medicines.
He mentioned that the experts have spent two years researching the nutritional properties of the coca leaf.
He also announced that to initiate a second stage of research on the medicinal properties of the plant, higher volumes of coca are required. This process will be held in Bolivia.
According to Perez, there is an institution in Chapare that could be strengthened as a production and study center, in which specialists from this country will work to continue the work carried out in Cuba.
The objective of the Andean-Amazonian nation is to industrialize this product, for the coca harvester and other processes such as the production of spirits, as wine, which is already produced in France, he affirmed.
The coca leaf is not cocaine, it is a natural product that Bolivian citizens have historically consumed, he said.
President Evo Morales enacted on Wednesday, March 15th, law 906 in defense of the coca leaf, as a natural resource that represents the ancient culture of the country.
