Cuba Gives Attention to Volleyball Players Arrested in Finland
17 de marzo de 2017, 15:32Havana, March 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuban volleyball players imprisoned in Finland are not abandoned, the Legal Director of the National Sports Institute (Inder), Ramiro Domínguez stated.
Exclusively for Prensa Latina, Domínguez reiterated that Cuban players have received all possible support from Inder.
Both Inder President and Cuban ambassador to Finland have been present at the penitentiary on several times in order to meet and talk to them. And the exchange of the Cuban body with players´ relatives still remains, he stressed.
During this week, several press media echoed a report from La Gazetta dello Sport Italian newspaper, in which Cuban volleyball players complained about the treatment given by the Finnish authorities and about the lack of communication with their family.
In this regard, Domínguez believes that it is necessary to take into consideration the local prison system.
We will do everything humanly possible for our athletes to be at home as early as possible, in addition to the mistakes committed. There is a civil involvement to the victim, he said.
In this regard, the jurist stated the fact that they are not all together in the same prison is due to decisions taken by Finnish authorities, since each country has its own particularities.
Everything goes through the will of those affected, because despite our desire, we will always respect the local legislation, and we do respect for the internal rules of each nation, he stated.
On May 16, defense lawyers are expected to appeal, in which they will try to reduce or overturn players' sentence for aggravated rape.
As to last September 20´s sentence, Luis Tomás Sosa must serve a three and a half year sentence, while Osmany Uriarte, Rolando Cepeda, Ricardo Calvo and Abraham Alfonso were sentenced to five years in prison.
Sosa and Uriarte, both 21, were sent to Turku prison; while Cepeda (27), Calvo (20) and Alfonso (21) are in KylmÃñkoski, close to Tampere, the city where the events occurred.
