Nobel Prize for Literature Derek Walcott Passed Away
Castries, Mar 17 (Prensa Latina) The 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature, Derek Walcott, reportedly passed away today here at the age of 87 after suffering from a long illness.
According to the St. Lucia Times newspaper, the family of the renowned writer confirmed his death after being hospitalized and undergoing dialysis treatments.
Considered one of the best Caribbean poets of his time, Walcott is the author of more than 15 books and some thirty plays.
'Another life', 'Star Apple Kingdom', 'The Arkansas Testament' and 'Omeros', epic poem published in 1990 and based on the Odyssey, are among his most outstanding works.
Born in 1930 in Castries, he was a prominent professor and worked in several universities. His work reflects Caribbean culture, customs and history, as well as the feelings of a colonized region.
